What a treat this garden was! I was approached by Ben, our client, to dream up a landscape scheme to complement a new build he had commissioned from the renowned architect Sarah Wigglesworth.

The old abandoned garden, where the new house was to be built, used to be a Market Garden, part of larger farm. Working closely with the architects, we came up with a design for the house and garden which honoured that heritage. An additional consideration was an old original Victorian greenhouse, which was totally dilapidated but also fully alive, if that doesn’t sound like a total contradiction! The client and I fell under its Romantic spell.

However, it was in the wrong place, where the new house would be built. How could we put this into landfill? It was very important for all of us that the garden kept the environment in mind. Inspired by the trees growing through the broken planes of glass, a plan was hatched to bring it into the 21stcentury. No effort or expense was spared to find the best craftsmen who could bring this Sleeping Beauty back to life. It now sits now proudly, lovingly restored and reconfigured, as an outdoor studio for our artist client.
